Nintendo Direct: Super Mario Bros. Wonder is the Next 2D Adventure in the Series
Were you wondering when the next 2D Super Mario Bros. game would be announced? All right, forgive us, that was a terrible pun, but what doesn’t look terrible is Super Mario Bros. Wonder, which is being touted by Nintendo as the next evolution of 2D Mario platforming. In what looks to be a refreshing departure from the New Super Mario Bros. visual style, Wonder looks to be stepping things up with a more animated looking graphics and some zany gameplay. Give it a look:
One can’t help but get a strong hint of Super Mario Odyssey embedded in the wildly creative environments on display in Wonder. The new Wonder Flowers sprinkled throughout the game look to spice up the action by doing things like make hordes of enemies appear, spring pipes to life, or even alter the look of a character. Players can choose between Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Toad this time around, as well as Daisy and Yoshi. There’s also a new powerup for Mario to utilize: Elephant Mario, which is every bit as cute as it sounds.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder hits Nintendo Switch on October 20. How much the game will truly evolve the patented Mario side-scrolling formula is still in the air, but with more details to come and a promising first trailer, hopes are high that a new era for the franchise is nearly here.
