No, it\u2019s not just that they are all popular IP\/Franchises. (IP driven games fail very often too, it took 3 versions to get CoD right on mobile). While it\u2019s true there is no one factor or a \u201c<strong>Reductionist<\/strong>\u201d winning formula like gameplay, IP or UA. A game imposing multiple cognitive loads on a \u201cCasual\u201d player can frustrate them by placing immense friction in their path.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Many traditional PC\/Console game genres especially mid core\/ hard core games, make players simultaneously\u00a0<strong>juggle multiple loads<\/strong>\u00a0that force the player to<strong>\u00a0learn, think, memorise, and keep track<\/strong>\u00a0of multiple aspects of the game, like manage resources, multi touch inputs, strategic planning, constant peer pressure, stats. min\/maxing, buffs\/de-buffs soliciting, as a result all of these loads make the;\u00a0<strong>learning, playability,\u00a0<em>skill and mastery curve steeper for an \u201cCasual\u201d player<\/em><\/strong>, making the game appear hard to play, now combine this with the amount of real estate you have on mobile devices,\u00a0<strong>all these loads ramp up friction\u00a0and act as a\u00a0high barrier to entry<\/strong>\u00a0for casual players on how do you revise these loads for casual players, while still keeping the genre\u2019s essence intact?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2 id=\"load-management-is-the-key\">Load Management is the key\u2026<\/h2>\n<p>From repeat successes I have seen and analysed over the years, many developers that made the successful mobile adaptation of mid\/hard core genres for\u00a0<em>mass market appeal<\/em>\u00a0have\u00a0<em>either altogether removed certain loads (<strong>Load Erasing<\/strong>) or reduced the load\u2019s magnitude ie: difficulty of those loads (<strong>Load Easing<\/strong>) by trading off and diluting game mechanics.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Let\u2019s look at some case studies, here are two traditionally hardcore PC\/console genres games that became breakout hits on Mobile that I have analysed in the past:<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"marvel-contest-of-champions\">Marvel Contest of Champions<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"
