For over a decade they\u2019ve been redefining digital identity and their personal style, but in the past few years we\u2019ve seen incredible leaps in the evolution of self-expression on our platform.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Iconic fashion brands have established presences here on Roblox by partnering with our creator community, and the rollout of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Layered Clothing<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 our new technology powering hyper-realistic 3D clothing \u2013 has once again raised the bar for what our creators are able to make. As the opportunities for self-expression and personal style accelerate, we decided to take a moment to connect with our incredible community and get a deeper understanding of their experience with digital fashion. We conducted extensive research, drawing both from our own platform as well as survey responses\u00b9<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from a thousand Gen Z members who are active on Roblox and closely familiar with digital fashion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To offer an in-depth look at the digital fashion trends we\u2019ve been seeing, we\u2019ve partnered with one of the world\u2019s leading institutions for art and design education, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parsons School of Design<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to launch our \u20182022 Metaverse Fashion Trends\u2019 report.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Here are the top 5 trends.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>2. The Influence of Creator Communities on Fashion Is Accelerating<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2022 alone, <\/span><b>more than<\/b> <b>11.5 million creators<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> designed <\/span><b>over 62 million<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> virtual clothing and accessory items on Roblox. These creators dress millions of people all over the world and impact how they express themselves both in the digital and physical worlds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To put that in context, there are at least <\/span><b>200 times as many creators<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> designing clothing and accessories on Roblox as the estimated number of fashion designers creating physical collections in the United States\u00b2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>In 2022, we\u2019ve seen a large influx of global fashion and beauty brands<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> creating digital fashion and immersive experiences for Roblox (or integrating with existing popular experiences on the platform) \u2013 including <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gucci<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Burberry<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carolina Herrera<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tommy Hilfiger<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NARS<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alo Yoga<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and supermodel and entrepreneur Karlie Kloss, as well as metaverse-only fashion companies like DRESSX. Self-Expression and Inclusivity in Digital Fashion Is Essential for\u00a0<\/b><b>Gen Z<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The vast majority of Gen Z who are active on Roblox said in our survey that they have customized their avatars, with <\/span><b>half<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of them changing their avatar\u2019s clothing<\/span><b> at least every week<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just like in the physical world, people tend to connect with and react to others around them based on the way they look and dress, which can have a profound impact on their self-confidence and relationships. In our survey, they\u2019ve noted the importance of having a full range of skin tones <\/span><b>(said 70%)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a full range of body sizes <\/span><b>(64%),<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> along with a full range of hair colors, textures and styles <\/span><b>(70%)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Seven in ten<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> consider inclusivity in digital clothing designs<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to be \u201cvery\u201d or \u201cextremely\u201d important. This challenge can be addressed by new technology like Layered Clothing, a new feature that\u2019s been embraced by both our community creators and users. Over the course of 2022, over <\/span><b>157 million<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> users on Roblox have already acquired both free and paid items community-created Layered Clothing items.\u00a0<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<h4><b>3. Nearly 3 in 4 Gen Z Say They Spend on Digital Fashion<\/b><b><\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People are expressing themselves through their avatar style and Roblox fashion choices similarly to how they do in the physical world, with <\/span><b>over half (53%)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> saying their style changes based on their mood or feelings on a particular day, and <\/span><b>37%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> changing clothing based on where they are going in the metaverse and what they are doing. IRL Trends Influence Avatar Fashion (and Vice Versa)<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In our survey, <\/span><b>70%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Gen Z said their avatars dress at least somewhat like their IRL style, with equally as many <\/span><b>(70%)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> saying they also get physical style inspiration from dressing their avatars.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take the #Barbiecore trend, which started on social media as part of the excitement for the upcoming \u201cBarbie\u201d movie, or Y2K nostalgia: the Roblox community rushed to reflect these key 2022 fashion trends both in creation of items and their avatar styling.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The timely launch of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forever 21 x Barbie<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> collection helped ensure shoppers could quickly (and literally) get dolled up for their metaverse adventures, and the Y2K trend has been peaking on Roblox, with total purchases of Y2K-labeled items surpassing <\/span><b>188 million <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from January to September 2022.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-42631 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/glossingdress.com\/lib\/img\/all\/252\/6c675ebf5e21cf9748c6812620b7b986a4f475e01624b6770d314faa3d789978\/2244c35a6c452f70e91b55f0cda4947b1ca9ce8ad351af2c75c0233e734bdd33.png\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2758px) 100vw, 2758px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/glossingdress.com\/lib\/img\/all\/252\/6c675ebf5e21cf9748c6812620b7b986a4f475e01624b6770d314faa3d789978\/2244c35a6c452f70e91b55f0cda4947b1ca9ce8ad351af2c75c0233e734bdd33.png 2758w, https:\/\/blog.roblox.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/y2k-avatar-shop-300x135.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.roblox.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/y2k-avatar-shop-1024x460.png 1024w, https:\/\/blog.roblox.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/y2k-avatar-shop-768x345.png 768w, https:\/\/blog.roblox.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/y2k-avatar-shop-1536x691.png 1536w, https:\/\/blog.roblox.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/y2k-avatar-shop-2048x921.png 2048w, https:\/\/blog.roblox.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/y2k-avatar-shop-1920x863.png 1920w\" alt=\"Roblox's Y2K avatar shop\" width=\"2758\" height=\"1240\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><b>5. The Prestige of Digital Fashion Is On The Rise<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recent industry research<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> points to Gen Z\u2019s \u201coutsized impact on culture and economy,\u201d given that this consumer group accounts for approximately a quarter of the world\u2019s population, and already has a purchasing power of hundreds of billions of dollars in the U.S. alone.
